Oldest letterbox with original contents?

From: (dlkotlarek@gmail.com) | Date: 2017-06-28 02:22:33 UTC

Hi to whoever still reads this board!

We had heard that the oldest letterbox in WI had suffered some water damage.  Since we are currently vacationing in that area, we checked on it and I'm currently in the process of drying out the original logbook. Luckily most of the images and notes are still readable.

That got me to wondering if this is perhaps the oldest letterbox in the USA with all the original contents still intact.  This box contained a custom made stamp with an image and text indicating its location.  It is still in the box.  The box also contains 3 logbooks - the original logbook indicates it was planted  on SEP 26, 1998 and the first finder was in either 1998 or 1999.  There were 2 other finders in 1999 and one in 2000.  After that activity picked up in 2001.  The first logbook contains visitors from 1998/99 - 2004 (Martini Man & I found it in 2004).  The second logbook has entries from 2004-2006 and the third logbook from 2006-2016.  We will be adding a fourth logbook when we put it back in place.

Are there any other boxes from 1998 that still contain the original stamp and logbook?

I am so glad y'all are able to salvage this old letterbox.  I found it last year and it was so wet I couldn't stamp in and didn't have time to dry it out.  I notified the adopted owner but never heard back so glad I mentioned it to you and other Great Lakes boxers.

Back in 2013 I found another old box with original contents in Vermont.  It is Rolling Rock Letterbox and was also placed on Sep 26, 1998 by Tom Cooch, so I guess these two are tied for oldest with original contents.

P.S. Hope GLG 2017 was fun and y'all are enjoying being "tourists" in Wisconsin now that you live in AZ.

Darn! We were in Vermont earlier this month.  We found the Prayer Rock box but didn't do any research about other old boxes.  We would have loved to find another box with original contents.

P.S.  We have been traveling in the northern states for 2 months and it has been quite rainy and cool most of the time. We're missing our dry and sunny Arizona!  I know it is quite hot down there now, but next summer we will not be leaving our adopted state so soon.

Dear Wisconsin Hiker,

As Silver Eagle indicated, the Rolling Rock Letterbox in Braintree, VT, which was hidden on Sept. 26, 1998, is still in place with the original contents.

There are two other Vermont boxes of mine hidden in 1998 that are also still in place with original contents: Braintree Panther and Kimball Letterbook.

Erik Davis, the Vermont Viking, placed two letterboxes on the Long Trail in 1998 but I don’t know if they are still in place or not.

Glad that there are still folks who read postings to this list.

It is the Cave Point box in Wisconsin. Dragon adopted it and encoded the original clues to give it a bit of protection.

We'll be putting it back in place on Friday.

Interesting question! I think Prayer Rock was recarved. No clue about other early boxes.

Silver Eagle and I found "James P. Taylor" box on Long Trail in Killington (dated 11/6/1999) back in 2013.  But bad weather in area, so did not look for any more.
